Reception Problems After Unlocking iPhone 3GS

SMS -- more popularly known as "texting" -- is a widely used messaging tool available on all modern cell phones, particularly suited for situations where a phone call may not be possible or appropriate. The iPhone makes it easy to communicate via SMS, although from time to time you may experience issues while sending or receiving texts.

Poor Service

While SMS works better than a phone call in situations where there is poor service, it is not foolproof. Failure to receive a text might be caused by the phone being in an area where your cell signal strength is not sufficient. Move to an area with stronger service if at all possible; the indicator in the upper-left corner of your iPhone screen will let you know how strong your reception is.

Incorrect Setup

If you have recently ported your number, call the customer service number of your new wireless carrier and ask them to confirm that your phone settings are correct. If you have not ported your number and are experiencing issues, try resetting your network settings. Tap "Settings," then "General." Scroll to the bottom and tap "Reset," then tap "Reset Network Settings."

IMessage Problems

Newer versions of iOS include a new messaging platform called iMessage. When a SMS conversation occurs between two iOS devices, the iPhone uses Apple’s own messaging platform instead of SMS. From time to time the iMessage network experiences issues, which results in delays in messages being sent and/or received. Messages should still eventually be transmitted, however; the iPhone is set to default to the standard SMS if it cannot send the message via the iMessage network.

IPhone Bugs

On rare occasions, bugs within the iPhone’s operating system itself might cause some SMS issues. In this case, the phone must be updated. Connect the device to your computer via USB and check to see if there are any updates available for your specific model.
